Conservatory Engagement Session | Erica + Aaron
Green All Year Round
For those of you needing to get your engagement pictures done ASAP, but live in the Midwest and it’s WINTER…this blog post is for you. Erica + Aaron were just like you. They were having a short engagement and needed to get those fresh save the date’s out. We needed to meet up in downtown Chicago in the middle of February - our hopes of above zero temps were not high. However, we didn’t let that get us down ;)
We decided to meet up at Lincoln Park Conservatory for their session, and boy did it not disappoint. Didn’t hurt that this was ALSO the place that Aaron proposed <3 . I loved this session and I love these two. Nonstop laughter and nonstop flirting, they made my job a piece of cake.
Having a winter engagement session at a conservatory is a KILLER option, and a great alternative for those of you wanting some green but are in a time crunch. Here are some pros + cons of having an engagement session at a conservatory:
PROS:
Green all year round
You can shoot there rain, snow or shine
With window ceilings, conservatories let in tons more natural light than other indoor photo spots
CONS:
You may need to buy a shooting permit
It’s warmer in there than you’d expect, dress in layers HA
You may have to work around other visitors and have a little bit more of limited movement compared to an outdoor park
Pro Tip: Do NOT stand up on the little rock walls to get that perfect angle. You WILL get yelled at by the conservatory employess :)))))
Here’s a list of other great conservatories in Chicago + Indianapolis areas that you could use for an engagement session:
Lincoln Park Conservatory | Garfield Park Conservatory (Chicago) | Garfield Park Conservatory (Indy) | Hilbert Conservatory | Newfield’s
PS - Erica + Aaron DID brave the cold for the last part of their session. We hopped outside of the conservatory and then made our way over to the courtyard of Fourth Presbyterian Church. Having two locations (one inside and one outside) is a smart move for chilly sessions. That way you’re able to warm up! And as always, traveling to an awesome location that IS warm during the winter might be the move for you - trust me, no photographer will complain about that ;)
